Average White Band’s AWB. Posted on 23rd March 2016. We were in the process of making that second album for our first label, MCA. Went to their office in Los Angeles and they turned us down, turned the record down and almost turfed us out. We then played those same tapes to Atlantic’s Jerry Wexler and he signed us up on the spot. We then went on to remake the album for Atlantic and Pick Up The Pieces became the big, worldwide, hit, said band member, singer/bassist, Alan Gorrie. And how MCA must have been kicking themselves. Atlantic was, at the time, a major force in soul, R&B and funk but the Average White Band fitted in perfectly. Which was interesting because just about everyone on that label and everyone who heard their major hit, Pick Up The Pieces, were convinced that the band was black. Not so, this was a white ban. rom Scotland, of all places.

I fount the second side to be good enough to frequently play. Love pulling this stuff out and blowing minds.

This record is among the few CD-4 that truly works in stereo. In large part because I worked closely with Gene Paul to create a very compatible mix for the type of sum and difference matrix technology used in CD-4 stereo compatibility. It along with Clapton's "461 Ocean Blvd" and "There's One In Every Crowd" have some of the best compatible mixes. Both the Clapton disc I did with Tom Dowd.

One of the best Blue Eyed Soul brotha albums ever released! The band is tight and funky, the vocals surly and sweet. The complete package... 70's soul at its finest on a really great pressing and properly mastered! 2 thumbs up!

How could anybody in their right funky mind not care for this? It's one of the greatest blue eyed funk Lp's of all time...who cares about the color of their skin? I mean really...also how is it possible that this record is rated at below 4.0?!!It's truly flabbergasting...I thought collectors on here had some taste...

On first listen didn't care for it all that much then I realized they were all white literally and I was intrigued. On my 3rd or 4th listen I fell in love. This is GREAT

I am the mastering engineer on this special CD-4 quadraphonic version. The runout inscription includes my sig "DWJ"; Quadradisc credits list Gene Paul for the quad remix and I am credited for CD-4 mastering at JVC Cutting Center. I had seen AWB live at Eric Clapton's comeback show at London's Rainbow Theater and became a huge fan. I also mastered a couple of Quad releases for Clapton and Ian Anderson as the English invasion was on in America at the time. A great time to be in the music business in LA.

It's an AMAZING sounding version. Quiet vinyl. Dynamic, even played in stereo!

Thanks sk, It was one of the more enjoyable CD-4 records that I mastered at JVC Cutting Center. As this was the early days of the so called "Quad Revolution" there was a huge push on by the labels involved in the CD-4 collective to get content in the marketplace. I had seen AWB live at Eric Clapton's comeback show at London's Rainbow Theater and became a huge fan. I also mastered a couple of Quad releases for Clapton and Ian Anderson as the English invasion was on in America at the time. A great time to be in the music business in LA.

And this LP it sounds really good. Thanks Darrell.
