Move To Groove (Live). Written-By – Edwin Birdsong. Move To Groove: The Best Of 1970s Jazz-Funk ‎(2xCD, Comp). Verve Records, Chronicles.

The 1970s was arguably the single decade of the 20th century when recorded music was most central to culture. As the used vinyl bins of the world are still telling us, records were the thing. Labels were flush with cash, sales of LPs and singles were brisk, and record stores were everywhere. Home stereos were a standard part of middle-class culture. The best disco songs imply infinity in both their length and groove, and always feel as if they’re attached to a black hole. Haven’t You Heard enhances time until it feels like the glitter of a cityscape unfurling through a cab window.

Because of its emphasis on danceable, funky grooves, jazz-funk became highly popular in the British underground music scene (where it was known as "rare groove") when it was rediscovered during the mid- to late '80s; an update version mixed with funk and hip-hop became known as acid jazz. For similar reasons, jazz-funk was also the style to which many American hip-hop artists turned when looking for ways to fuse jazz and rap; Roy Ayers, in particular, enjoyed a renaissance and reappraisal in both scenes  . Jazz-Funk Album Highlights.

Jazz-funk groups and artists are shown below along with any additional genres in which their music belongs.

The album’s title track is a spacey groove in which long instrumental passages are punctuated by warmly-harmonised vocal choruses. It’s propelled by Chuck Rainey’s bass and features wispy synth lines which entwine with Humphrey’s breathy flute melodies. Also prominent is Jerry Peters’ tinkling piano. Jasper Country Man’ is another addictive groove with a funkafied undertow. After a drum and conga intro, the instrumentation is gradually layered on top. It’s looser than some of the other cuts on the album and, for once, it lacks a vocal chorus, which means that Humphrey is given free rein to flex her improv muscles. The rhythm track was sampled by rapper Ice-T for his 1991 song ‘New Jack Hustler’. Baby’s Gone’ finds Bobbi Humphrey back on the microphone, as well as playing flute, on a dreamy song that features a guitar solo from David T Walker and whose laidback mood epitomises Blacks And.

With its strong funk underpinning and trancelike flow, Lala Belu fits right into the body-moving sound of cutting-edge jazz in 2018. So it’s interesting to note that the man behind the album, Hailu Mergia, is a keyboardist in his early seventies, famous in his native Ethiopia but largely unknown outside his home country until the 2013 reissue of one of his Eighties LPs by the tastemaking Awesome Tapes From Africa Label. Probably best known as a foil for eminent singers like Etta Jones and soul-jazz greats such as Richard Groove Holmes, tenor ace Houston Person has ventured all across the genre in a career spanning more than five decades. Here he’s matched with one of the relatively few musicians alive who could boast a similar range and longevity: super-bassist, Guinness World Record holder and follow octogenerian Ron Carter, his duo partner stretching back decades. Supported by like-minded adventurers Danilo Perez on piano, John Patitucci on bass and Brian Blade on drums, the plunges into extended works that move from poetic tenderness to swooping, surging drama. At 85, he’s still exploring new worlds.

The jazz albums listed below are among the greatest ever recorded. Mostly selected from the golden "modern" jazz music era of 1940's to the 1970's, these recordings captured the great passion and emotion that these musicians spent a lifetime developing. Kind Of Blue - Miles Davis While it is one of the top selling jazz albums of all time, many consider this to be THE best jazz album of all time. This may be because this unrehearsed recording session from 1959 marks a great turning point in jazz history as well as showcasing the top form of some legendary musicians  . This album also marked a departure from the traditional bebop style with songs that are simple melodies over simple chord progressions leaving room for the deep improvisational exploration. What a treat it is to listen to time and time again. A Love Supreme - John Coltrane This album completely revolutionized the jazz scene in 1965 and even today its influence can be found in many musical styles.
