It was released on February 7, 1973, by Columbia Records. The album departed musically from the "groove-ridden, feel-based songs" of the band's first two records in favor of more anthemic hard rock while featuring guitar and songwriting contributions by James Williamson.

The Stooges, also known as Iggy and the Stooges, were an American rock band formed in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1967 by singer Iggy Pop, guitarist Ron Asheton, drummer Scott Asheton, and bassist Dave Alexander. Playing a raw, primitive style of rock and roll, the band sold few records in their original incarnation and gained a reputation for their confrontational performances, which often involved acts of self-mutilation by Iggy Po. .Homemade instruments were also incorporated to flesh out the overall sound. This line-up, billed as Iggy & the Stooges, recorded their third album, the influential Raw Power, which was released in 1973. At the time, the album (which showcased Williamson's intensely melodic solos and chromatic riffs, in contrast to Asheton's minimalistic, groove-oriented approach) was criticized by diehard fans who said that Bowie had mixed it poorly (in subsequent years, various unofficial fan recordings were assembled and released as the album Rough Power; in 1997, the album was re-mixed by Iggy Pop. and re-released).

Raw Power is the third and final studio album by The Stooges. Though not initially commercially successful, Raw Power gained a cult fanbase in the years following its release and, like its predecessor (1970's Fun House), is generally considered an influential forerunner of punk rock. Iggy produced and mixed the album by himself; unfortunately, his botched first attempt mixed most of the instruments into one stereo channel and the vocals into the other, with little regard for balance or tone quality. Tony DeFries, the head of MainMan, informed Iggy that the album would be remixed by David. In the reissued CD's liner notes, however, Pop points out that one of his intentions in doing the new mix was to keep audio levels in the red (which would deliberately cause such distortion) while at the same time making the music more "powerful and listenable". This new version is arguably the loudest album ever, reaching RMS of -4 dB, rare even by today's standards. James Williamson and Ron Asheton have both stated that they prefer Bowie's original mix of the album to Pop's remixed version.

Singer Iggy Pop had retained latter-day Stooges guitarist James Williamson, and the duo sought to form a new band far away from the group’s home base of Ann Arbor, Michigan. We got a record deal with Columbia, and Jim had signed with MainMan Management – which was David Bowie’s management, Williamson recalls. We came over to London with the idea of forming a new band, to make the record. But we ended up not really finding the kind of guys that we were interested playing with  . Now armed with Raw Power and a set of other equally powerful tunes, The Stooges set out to lay down the tracks that would become the Raw Power album. David Bowie was producing a lot of bands back then, like Mott The Hoople and so on. And they made overtures to us, but we just kind of pretended we didn’t hear them. Recording-wise, we did that ourselves with an engineer from Columbia, in CBS Studios in London.

Howling like an unhinged banshee in heat, Iggy Pop leads his fellow Stooges in a hellacious celebration of forbidden thrills on 1973's Raw Power. As the album's producer, David Bowie pulled the band from the brink of self-destruction, turned them loose in the studio, and cut this album at their maniacal peak. James Williamson's guitar unleashes quivering, note-slicing riffs, Ron Ashton's bass pumps relentlessly, and Scott Ashton's drums crash and clatter with glee
