Jean de La Fontaine was a French poet and fabulist, who lived and worked during the XVII century. For special contributions to French literature he was elected to the French Academy of Sciences in 1684. Published in 1668, the collection of fables brought La Fontaine international fame. The works of the ancient Greeks, Indian storytellers, other fabulists and folk tales about animals serve as a source of inspiration for the author. Drawing motives from these works, La Fontaine brings new life to the fable genre. A Hundred fables of La Fontaine.

Lucie Madeleine Renaud (French: ; 21 February 1900 – 23 September 1994) was a French actress best remembered for her work in the theatre. She did though appear in several films directed by Jean Grémillon including Remorques (Stormy Waters, 1941) and Lumière d'été (Summer Light, 1943). Renaud had a son, Jean-Pierre Granval (10 December 1923 – 28 May 1998), by her first marriage. In 1940, Renaud married her second husband, actor-director Jean-Louis Barrault (1910 – 1994).

Jean de La Fontaine collected fables from a wide variety of sources, both Western and Eastern, and adapted them into French free verse. They were issued under the general title of Fables in several volumes from 1668 to 1694 and are considered classics of French literature. Humorous, nuanced and ironical, they were originally aimed at adults but then entered the educational system and were required learning for school children.

This is a treasure- the classic fables in verse by Jean de la Fontaine peerlessly illustrated by the the great caricaturist, .

Jean de La Fontaine, Fables choises, 1755-59 at Waddesdon Manor. It was about this time that the quartet of the Rue du Vieux Colombier, so famous in French literary history, was formed. It consisted of La Fontaine, Racine, Boileau and Molière, the last of whom was almost of the same age as La Fontaine, the other two considerably younger. In that same year, La Fontaine converted to Christianity. A young priest, M. Poucet, tried to persuade him about the impropriety of the Contes and it is said that the destruction of a new play was demanded and submitted to as a proof of repentance A story is told of the young duke of Burgundy, Fénelon's pupil, who was then only eleven years old, sending 50 louis to La Fontaine as a present of his own motion.
