Of the albums pianist Masabumi Kikuchi released as a leader or participated in as a sideman, few, if any, are as personal and revelatory as Black Orpheus. Recorded solo at the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan Recital Hall in 2012, it was his final such outing. In his liner notes, pianist Ethan Iverson - who admits he was not initially convinced of Kikuchi's gifts - states that, "The best of Masabumi has extraordinary vulnerability and corresponding extraordinary magic. Kikuchi was an outsider artist, determined to follow his own way no matter the cost

If Cecil Taylor were a minimalist, he’d sound like Masabumi Kikuchi does on this extraordinary album, recorded live in Tokyo in 2012. It was Kikuchi’s last solo recording. Kikuchi died three years later at the age of seventy-five. For comparison, think of Keith Jarrett’s solo albums. Jarrett’s performances tend to run long, Kikuchi’s here, short: ten originals plus Luiz Bonfa’s Manha de Carnaval, under four to eight minutes in length.

Black Orpheus reveals that Kikuchi's iconoclastic path may have been worth it. This album is not an epitaph for Kikuchi, but an entryway. Thom Jurek, All Music It is a fascinating example of his singular style, often dense and dark, but such pieces are often interspersed with sparse sections, and his touch is sometimes heart-breakingly delicate. What he does with Black Orpheus is a good way in to his own compositions. Peter Bacon, The Jazz Breakfast Wenn er spielte, schien die Zeit stehenzubleiben. Melodien in ganz zarter Erstarrung. Black Orpheus features music drawn from the last solo recital of a highly individual artist, the Japanese pianist Masabumi Kikuchi (1939-2015). It represents the full flowering of Kikuchi’s late style, with an individuality which resists concise summary. For Masabumi, the Tokyo recording proposed a new approach to the solo piano formation. Displayed here, the concert unfolds almost continuously as a series of improvisations. They reveal that Kikuchi's fierce dedication to discovering his own voice on the piano was a rigorous, almost ascetic practice. The album's centerpiece is a staggering, intimate deconstruction and remarkable revisioning – note by note, tone by tone – of the title theme ("Manhã de Carnaval: Theme from Black Orpheus") by Luiz Bonfa. Kikuchi finds not only the haunted romance that lies at the tune's heart, but also mysterious metaphysics. Masabumi Kikuchi - Black Orpheus (2016) {ECM-Universal Music Japan UCCE-1160}. The pianist Masabumi Kikuchi died last year at the age of 75, mourned by those whose love of jazz is based, at least in part, on the way it offers a home to wandering spirits. It’s clear from the testimony of those who worked with Kikuchi that he wasn’t an easy person, either on himself or on others; his music was the product of an endless pilgrimage towards some sort of essence, some sort of truth, that could not be found in pretty surfaces or routine politeness. A new solo piano album called Black Orpheus (ECM) is the product of a recital three years ago in Tokyo, his birthplace
