Green and Gray reflects changes in both geography (the band moved to Nashville) and personnel (two members quit, replaced by guitarist Chappy Hull and bassist Alex Molini). Yet Kris Kuss’ pummelling work on the drums remains central to Pile’s sound, undergirding high-velocity prog-ish songs like On a Bigger Screen and A Bug on its Back. The resulting album incorporates considerably more atmospheric depth, including orchestral and keyboard overdubs. Pile are not growing soft, but they are growing: Firewood, this album’s disarming opener, finds Maguire brooding about his spent youth and gray hairs as a whining cello jostles for space in the mix. It’s lovely in the way that late-career Polvo songs can be lovely, with just the right amount of tenderness before the climax comes crashing in.
Green & Gray is an album that revealed itself to me in waves. Having exactly zero prior knowledge of the band Pile, I was unburdened by expectation. This proved to be a blessing. After an initial listen I was fairly convinced that this recording was something special. Yet, it was only a transient feeling. The why remained elusive. Seeking context, I learned of Pile’s noisy history, DIY aesthetic, and knack for garnering an unusually enthusiastic fanbase. This knowledge brought me no closer to the why I sought, because Green and Gray is not static

Pile has confirmed details of its seventh studio album. Green and Gray is due for release on May 3 and is preceded by new song "Bruxist Grin," written about vocalist Rick Maguire's first panic attack, which you can stream below. Green and Gray is the prolific rock band's follow-up to 2017 album A Hairshirt Of Purpose. Speaking about the band's new song in a statement, Maguire said: "I wrote "Bruxist Grin" when I was getting ready to move. I'd been showing people my place to take my apartment, and getting my life together to go make this record to then move two days after the session. It was a super tight timeline and I went to bed and had a panic attack
Green & Gray, Pile’s seventh album, is a tilt toward the other extreme. It’s a much louder record, more agitated and explosive. In fact, it’s been quite a few years since Rick Maguire and company-which now includes new members Chappy Hull and Alex Molini-have sounded so incendiary. That’s, essentially, because the last one wasn’t. Whatever record comes next is a response to the one before it, Maguire recently told Treble.
