Ravedeath, 1972 is the sixth studio album by Canadian electronic music musician Tim Hecker, released on February 14, 2011 by Kranky. The album was recorded primarily in Frikirkjan Church, Reykjavík, with contributions from Ben Frost. It makes prominent use of pipe organ, and was described by Hecker as "a hybrid of a studio and a live record.

The album is based on a single day's worth of recordings in a church in Reykjavik, Iceland, where Hecker used a groaning pipe organ to lay down the foundation for its tracks. Throughout, you can hear the vastness of this place, as sounds ricochet around, bounce off the rafters. But while there is harmony between the source material, Ravedeath, 1972 is by no means about prettiness or tranquility. Hecker pits noises against one another in such a way that creates a constant push and pull between discord and beauty. It's a bit like William Basinski's Disintegration Loops, but instead of music aging over time, this is far more combative- like these songs are being attacked from the inside out. It's an unusual concept but relevant given the rate at which music is consumed and discarded these days.

It seems the man has gone inward, taking the contemplative grandeur and catharsis of recent albums, like the symphonic gush of Harmony in Ultraviolet or the topographical expanse of An Imaginary Country, and re-applied it to a space that feels much more mournful by comparison. Sort of ghostwritten, like fingers on an Ouija board.

Album · 2011 · 12 Songs. Tim Hecker albums have always sounded like an eternal struggle between darkness and light, with glimpses of terror and tranquility lurking around the edges of every ambient loop. And while they’re all worth a late-night listen, Ravedeath, 1972 is one of his most cohesive artistic statements yet; 12 songs that bleed into one another beautifully. So beautifully, in fact, that they could have been combined into a single track without anyone noticing. Since they aren’t, it’s best to let the entire thing fill your room like the live recording that led to its creation.

Ravedeath, 1972 probably ranks alongside Hecker’s collaboration with Aidan Baker on Fantasma Parastasie as his most claustrophobic album. Lonely, warped piano figures echo across scratchy shortwave currents in a way that’s beautiful but also resigned

Despite Hecker’s previous high, powerful concepts, Ravedeath, 1972 is his most monolithic, impressionistically successful album yet, an album that uses Hecker’s typical expansive sound and applies it to provocative imagery. The cover and the first song of the album reference the annual piano drop at MIT, where students take a piano and drop it off of a roof – destroying something beautiful. Hecker, clearly inspired by this, deconstructs the sounds of him playing an organ in Reykjavik and uses it as the primary source material for his music.
