Lennie Tristano Quintet - Subconscious-Lee (1949). Personnel: Lee Konitz (alto sax), Lennie Tristano (piano), Billy Bauer (guitar), Arnold Fishkin (bass), Shelly Manne (drums). from the album 'LEE KONITZ WITH TRISTANO, MARSH & BAUER' (Prestige Records). In some ways Lester Young is the most complex rhythmically of any musician. He does some things which are just phenomenal.
Lee Konitz (born October 13, 1927) is an American composer and alto saxophonist. He has performed successfully in a wide range of jazz styles, including bebop, cool jazz, and avant-garde jazz. Konitz's association with the cool jazz movement of the 1940s and 1950s includes participation in Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool sessions and his work with pianist Lennie Tristano.
A debut for both Lee Konitz and the Prestige label, Subconscious-Lee brings together many of the students who came through Lennie Tristano's idiosyncratic "school" of jazz during the immediate postwar years.
