Herbert von Karajan’s first performance with the Berliner Philharmoniker in April 1938 was a sensation – and aroused the jealousy of principal conductor Wilhelm Furtwängler, who from then on considered the young star his rival. Concerned about the next generation of musicians, he initiated the Orchestra Academy in 1972: it prepares prospective orchestra musicians to work in a professional orchestra. Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker were considered a dream team. But the later years of their working together were overshadowed by conflicts and estrangement. The conflict that seemed perhaps the most spectacular in the public sphere was the case of the clarinettist Sabine Meyer, whom Karajan – against the objections of the orchestra – wanted to engage for the Berlin Philharmonic. Liner Notes – Gordon Stewart, John Culshaw. Orchestra – Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Photography By – Louis Mélançon. Producer – Christopher Raeburn, Erik Smith, John Culshaw. Vocals – Peter Klein. Vocals – Eberhard Wächter.

Herbert Von Karajan is one of greatest musicians to ever live. Born on April 5, 1907, the famed conductor left a massive recorded legacy after a career that included prominent performances with the top orchestras in the world. The work features a solid cast that includes Hilde Gueden, Waldemar Kmentt, Eberhard Wachter, Walter Berry, Regina Resnik, Giuseppe Zampieri, Erika Koth and Erich Kuns among others. But the big surprise of the set comes from the guest artists that the great conductor managed to put together during the second act party. But the real gem in this album also comes from the guest performer – tenor Giuseppe Di Stefano. Still very much in his prime, the Italian singer performs two entries including O Sole Mio and Dein ist mein ganzes Herz! from Das Land des Lachelns. This recording also follows the Viennese tradition of having a tenor sing the role of Prince Orlofsky.

The international Herbert von Karajan Music Prize (German: Herbert von Karajan Musikpreis), was an annual award presented by the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden in honour of the celebrated 20th century Austrian conductor, Herbert von Karajan. The prize was inaugurated in 2002 and the monetary element was set at 50,000 Euro, which must be used by the recipient to help further the careers of young musicians. It was first awarded in 2003, to the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter

Wiener Singverein, Wiener Symphoniker. Tenor : Walther Ludwig; Bass : Paul Schöffler; Soprano : Irmgard Seefried; Contralto : Kathleen Ferrier; Bass : Otto Edelmann; Bass : Erich Kaufmann; Bass : Harald Pröglhöf; Bass : Otto Wiener; Bass : Walter Berry; Soprano : Anny. Of course, I wouldnīt want to be without the Karajan recordings but strictly because of the soloists (there is another B Minor Mass (BWV 232) by him BTW). Riccardo Nughes wrote (May 1, 2001): (To Teri Noel Towe) Please, can you specify which orchestra . on Karajan was conducting? Thanks, Philip Peters wrote (May 1, 2001): (To Riccardo Nughes) Wiener Symphoniker. Though you couldn't tell it from the packaging, the other singers are Seefried, Edelmann & Berry, a fine lineup indeed.
