Introite Calliope, the first track off Mendrugo’s More Amor rinses the outside world away. Medieval church services often began with an Introit, the Latin word for entrance, musical chant during which church servants would wander into place to begin their duties. Mendrugo combines that ritual with an allusion to Calliope, the ancient Greek muse of poetry and song, clearing the air for the happy, playful set of songs to come. The members of Mendrugo have always embraced a range of historical influences.

Mendrugo’s More Amor makes me think of moon-lit, alcohol-fueled campfire jams. Of lazy afternoons spent in an old house full of old instruments, various cats and dogs lying around, thrift store paintings on the crumbling walls, a hammock or two, and a spirit of easy-going creativity at all hours of the day and night.

Their self-composed debut album, recorded in the south of Spain, mixes folk and flamenco with unexpected operatic passages from Foster, who adds guitar, harp and bamboo flute.
