Neil Welch: Sleeper by Glenn Astarita, published on April 19, 2012. Sleeper is a quality product from noted Seattle new music and jazz saxophonist Neil Welch, who composed the lone 28-minute title track based on an incident that occurred during the US presence in Iraq. Sans rhythm section, Welch paints a vivid storyline, interspersing microtonal extended notes with deft subtleties and touches upon contemporary classical frameworks. Since the plot is based on a military endeavor, he generates an impassioned and intertwining progression of musical events throughout. At times listening to this piece is like walking a tightrope, where tension and jubilance attain.
Sleeper is the sixth studio album by American indie rock musician Ty Segall, released on August 24, 2013 on Drag City. Recorded between January and March 2013, the album features primarily acoustic psychedelic folk compositions, and is influenced by the death of Segall's father and his subsequent estrangement from his mother. Upon the album's release, Segall noted, "I was not in a good spot.
The War-Drobe Armory.
Coupled with Neil Gaiman's excellent, lyrical prose The Sleeper and The Spindle has successfully met my idea of a true whimsy fairytale. After waking from a year long magical sleep, Her Majesty the Queen is set to marry a young prince soon. Meanwhile, a sleeping sickness is spreading far and wide in other parts of her Kingdom. Do we really need another darker version of a well-known, heavily Disneyfied story? Apparently Neil G The Sleeper and the Spindle is an illustrated short story, mashing up Snow White and Sleeping Beauty with a feminist twist - the Prince Charming character is a woman and, gasp, she kisses another woman to awaken her! Also, most of the book is characters walking across a fantasy landscape so if you’re a Tolkien fan, you’re gonna love this!
It’s pretty easy to spot Ty Segall’s influences. This singer-songwriter, raised in Laguna Beach, Calif. has Neil Young’s name tattooed on his right arm and the logo from Black Sabbath’s 1972 album Vol. 4 inked on his left. Though only 26, Mr. Segall is a veteran of the Bay Area’s garage-rock.
