The Snake is the first solo album by Shane MacGowan with backing band The Popes. Released in 1994 by ZTT Records. Guests on the album include Johnny Depp, members of The Dubliners, Thin Lizzy and The Pogues.
Shane MacGowan, who made a name for himself as the bandleader of the Pogues until they got fed up with his asinine, self-destructive behavior and kicked him out of the group, returned with a new band (the Popes, get it?) and a bracing set of new songs that draw heavily on traditional Irish folk music while pinning your ears back with a. raucous, full-frontal rock sound. The album opens with a bang: "Church of the Holy Spook" is either an oblique expression of twisted religious faith or an all-out assault on the Roman church; it's impossible to tell which
The Popes are a band originally formed by Shane MacGowan (of the Pogues) and Paul "Mad Dog" McGuinness, who play a blend of rock, Irish folk and Americana. Shane MacGowan and The Popes released two studio and one live album in the 1990s, performing live together until 2005. During this era, The Popes also recorded and gigged on their own until 2006. At the end of 2006, guitarist Paul "Mad Dog" McGuinness reformed the band with a new line up and leads it to this day.

The album is a bracing set of songs that draw heavily on traditional Irish folk music while pinning your ears back with a raucous, full-frontal rock sound. Guests on the album include Johnny Depp, members of The Dubliners, Thin Lizzy, and The Pogues. 180 gram audiophile vinyl. Like a number of songs recorded by MacGowan's previous band, The Pogues, traditional tunes are sometimes used as a base for a new song. For example, the melody for "The Song With No Name" is based on "The Homes of Donegal".

THE SNAKE is Shane MacGowan's 1st solo album. Post Pogues MacGowan was older, perhaps mellowed, and in charge of the recording studio. The eight years spent touring with the Pogues had taken some toll on MacGowan's voice, but the wear and tear accents the spirit of the songs. Co-producer Dave Jordan, a long time Pogues technician and friend, knew first hand what the early Pogues, Irish dance music, and Shane MacGowan were all about. Not only does it sound the way MacGowan wanted it to sound, it sounds very good. Significantly, Irish rebel songs are back.
