Bryter Layter, recorded in 1970 and released in March 1971, is the second of three albums by British folk musician Nick Drake. Like Five Leaves Left, the album contains no unaccompanied songs: Drake was accompanied by part of the British folk rock group Fairport Convention and John Cale from The Velvet Underground, as well as Beach Boys musicians Mike Kowalski and Ed Carter. Arranger Robert Kirby claims that Drake intended the instrumentals to evoke Pet Sounds

Bryter Layter is Nick Drake’s second album after Five Leaves Left (1969). It was recorded during the course of 1970, in the Sound Techniques studio in London, and released on March 6, 1971. As with Five Leaves Left, Drake worked with John Wood as the engineer, Joe Boyd as the producer and Robert Kirby as the arranger of the brass and string segments.

On the release of Bryter Layter in 1970, the agoraphobic Nick Drake put the nails in the album's coffin by failing to accompany it with any publicity - or indeed barely any live performance. It was only after his death, (four years later from an overdose of prescription drugs), that the self-destructive singer's music garnered any real praise. It's telling that in his life he never really fitted in, and whether it was a cause or a symptom, his music followed a similar fate. He was a man out of sync, out of time

Starting with the elegant instrumental "Introduction," as lovely a mood-setting piece as one would want, Bryter Layter indulges in a more playful sound at many points, showing that Drake was far from being a constant king of depression. While his performances remain generally low-key and his voice quietly passionate, the.

Nick Drake could do no wrong. Yet again, he perfectly blends many genres to create a beautiful mix of sounds. This artist needs even more attention, because I believe that he paved the way to modern music through his raw feelings and experimented instrumentation. The lyrics tumble on top of each other and are quite repetitive. He sounds overwhelmed, which is an exciting sentiment to capture through music. His music always delivers an emotional kick in the heart, but Bryter Layter is particularly gorgeous and indulgent.

It also assembled many of the same musicians, and Robert Kirby as arranger, whose string and occasionally woodwind scores have become indelibly associated with Drake for most listeners.

Bryter Layter ‎(LP, Album, RE). Antilles. Excellent pressing, and good looking package. This sounds very crisp and quiet. This is the reissue to own of this timeless album. Reply Notify me Helpful. They got the texture on the sleeve wrong, but they got everything else right, so no complaints.

When Drake does slow things to a contemplative crawl, it's for three momentous songs. Brilliantly augmented by John Cale's swelling viola and harpsichord, "Hazey Jane I," "Fly," and "Northern Sky" are wistful, romantic tunes that capture Drake's overwhelming sense of displacement in a harsh yet beautiful world. Bryter Layter (Remastered) Nick Drake. The poster boy for melancholic singer/songwriters, Nick Drake recorded three very different studio albums in his 26 years. Where his debut Five Leaves Left is somber and string-laden, and his swan song Pink Moon acoustic and stark, Bryter Layter is a virtual party, featuring strings, horns, and a galvanizing rhythm section on loan from Fairport Convention. The band dynamic tints Drake's compositions with a cosmopolitan flavor. You can practically smell the sophisticated nightclub of "At the Chime of the City Clock.
