In the late 17th century, German and English composers tried to establish their own native traditions but by the early 18th century they had given ground to imported Italian opera, which became the international style in the hands of composers such as Handel. Only France resisted (and her operatic tradition had been founded by the Italian Lully). A libretto by Metastasio was often set by twenty or thirty different composers and audiences came to know the words of his dramas by heart. In the 17th century comic operas were produced only occasionally and no stable tradition was established. Only in the early years of the 18th century was the comic genre of opera buffa born in Naples and it began to spread throughout Italy after 1730. Opera buffa was distinguished from opera seria by numerous characteristics

Cavalli may or may not have had a hand in composing Pur ti Miro, the most famous of all love duets from mid 17th-century Venetian opera, which closes Monteverdi’s L’Incoronazione di Poppea, but it was clearly a model for much of his own vocal writing, in which the lines seem to yearn to intertwine so expressively. In turn, Cavalli’s own innovations would provide a starting point for later opera composers, from Lully, Purcell and Rameau through to Mozart and beyond. Smooth-tone. affaele Pe.

A quick guide to Monteverdi’s action-packed opera, based on one of the oldest stories in the world. By Kate Hopkins (Content Producer (Opera and Music)). Today, audiences can feel something of the excitement 17th century audiences must have felt when this intimate opera was first staged. For audiences at the Venice premiere it may also have been their first experience of opera. Venice only opened public opera houses (the first in the world) in 1637. So he took one of the oldest stories ever told – the homecoming of Ulysses in Homer’s Odyssey – and wrote a libretto.

Lauren Rader Music History I November 19, 2010 17th Century Opera in Venice Between 1637 and 1678, in nine different theaters, Venetian audiences saw more than 150 operas. The creation of public opera houses sparked the interest of the people of the time because of social and philosophical changes that were happening in the Republican state of Venice. Opera succeeded as a public art form for many reasons: because of its exquisite musicality, it was highly successful and it became a way to produce revenue. Ellen Rosand says that three conditions existed for opera to be a permanent establishment in the Venetian culture: there was regular demand during the carnival season, dependable financial backing, and a broad predictable audience.
