Rudolf Serkin recorded it four times: in 1941 with Bruno Walter and the New York Philharmonic; in 1953 with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra; in 1962 with Leonard Bernstein conducting the New York Philharmonic, and in 1981 with the Boston Symphony Orchestra under Seiji Ozawa. Bernstein recorded a live performance of the concerto in September 1989, shortly before his death, with Krystian Zimerman and the Vienna Philharmonic. In 2012, the Norwegian pianist Leif Ove Andsnes recorded all five of Beethoven's piano concertos in the album "the Beethoven Journey", with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. The original autograph (page 74r) has Adagio un poco moto ("Adagio with a little motion"), not mosso.

Performers: Rudolf Serkin‎, piano New York Philharmonic‎ Conductor: Leonard Bernstein. Rudolf Serkin's 1964 recording of Beethoven's Piano Concerto in C minor is surely among the greatest recordings of the work ever made, and certainly his finest performance of the work. The energy and enthusiasm and even passion he brings to Concerto in C minor is overwhelming, and indeed, it overwhelms Bernstein and the New York Philharmonic, who accompany Serkin with the sort of commitment that only a conductor and orchestra give to soloists when they are deeply inspired

The paring of Rudolf Serkin and Leonard Bernstein was magisterial in this music. Somewhere along the line, it become taboo to play Beethoven as a full-blooded romantic, with virtually all musicians settling for a stylish alternative in the name of being more "authentic". But Serkin and Bernstein didn't have such qualms, and the natural vivacity of their interpretations speak for themselves.
