Perfil: American DJ and pioneering hip hop artist. Born April 19, 1957 in the Bronx, NY, USA. He adopted the stage name Afrika Bambaataa Aasim, after a nineteenth century Zulu chief. He is of West Indian descent and cousin of Edward Rudolph AKA Kool Rock Steady. He grew up in New York’s South Bronx, his musical eclecticism matched by his vision of African American social and racial unity. In the mid-1970's he was one of the pioneers of New York’s emergent Hip-Hop culture of Rapping, DJ Mixing/Scratching, Graffiti and Breakdancing. The Universal Zulu Nation is an international hip hop awareness group formed by and formerly led by hip hop artist Afrika Bambaataa. They strongly promote that Hip-Hop was created to provide 'peace, love, unity and having fun' for those in the ghetto, and eventually onward to all those supportive of the culture. Originally known simply as the Organization, it arose in the 1970s as the reformed New York City gang the Black Spades, a street gang from South Bronx

Now, the Universal Zulu Nation-the hip-hop awareness organization that Bambaataa founded in the 1970s-has announced that it is "currently under new leadership" due to a "significant restructure. Zulu Leaders, didn't mention Bambaataa by name, but said, "As part of this restructure ALL accused parties and those accused of covering up the current allegations of child molestation have been removed and have stepped down from their current positions

The Universal Zulu Nation at the time was a music-oriented youth organization that became a world movement. Bambaataa pioneered the musical genre Electro Funk. He did this by grabbing a big pot and mixing up musical ingredients. The first ingredient was the pure funk sound of Parliament Funkadelic, George Clinton and Sly Stone. Next, he added a dash of electronic music from Japan in the flavor of Yellow Magic Orchestra, and a bit of spice from Germany, with sounds from Kraftwerk. I had a chance to catch up with the legendary Afrika Bambaataa and ask him a few questions. Check it out: Q: What was Hip-Hop like in the '70s before your created The Universal Zulu Nation? A: There was no name to what was happening in The Bronx. The culture was coming off the backs of what was happening in The Bronx from the early to the late '60s.
