That Was the Year That Was (1965) is a live album recorded at the hungry i in San Francisco, containing performances by Tom Lehrer of satiric topical songs he originally wrote for the NBC television series That Was The Week That Was, known informally as TW3 (1964–65). All of the songs related to items then in the news. The album peaked at on Billboard's Top 200 Albums on January 8, 1966 and was on the chart for 51 weeks. Side one: "National Brotherhood Week" – 2:35.

Tom Lehrer's work always had a biting, satirical edge to it, but never was this more obvious than on this album, a collection of songs regarding events of the year 1965. Very little was sacred from Lehrer's sharp wit, from racism to the Catholic Church, and, while much of his subject matter has become outdated, his shrewd comic talents are beyond question  . This album gives a fascinating insight into the politics of the 1960s United States and also shows one of the finest comedic talents of that decade at his absolute best.

Though a tad dated, Lehrer's wickedly pointed That Was the Year That Was is as good a representation of the mid-'60s American social and political climate as any. Recorded live in 1965 and composed largely of songs from the contemporaneous NBC series That Was the Week That Was, the album takes on boho Americana ("The Folk Song Army"), censorship ("Smut"), and the atomic bomb ("Who's Next"). Devilishly funny as well are the outstanding "Vatican Rag" and the puzzle that is "New Math. This album (now a CD) was recorded in the San Francisco Bay Area many years ago, but still is hilarious even today. Most people wouldn't know that at the time Lehrer performed Vatican Rag, close to 50% of San Francisco was populated by Catholics. His song, Pollution, also is aimed at the Bay Area. I hope you enjoy all the songs on this wonderful CD as much as I do.

Album That Was The Year That Was. Pollution Lyrics. If you visit American city You will find it very pretty Just two things of which you must beware: Don't drink the water and don't breath the air! Pollution, pollution They got smog and sewage and mud Turn on your tap And get hot and cold running crud. Pollution, pollution Wear a gas mask and a veil Then you can breathe As long as you don't inhale. Lots of things there that you can drink But stay away from the kitchen sink The breakfast garbage that you throw into the bay They drink at lunch in San Jose. So go to the city, see the crazy people there Like lambs to the slaughter They're drinking the water And breathing the air. More on Genius.

I always like to make explicit the fact that before I went off not too long ago to fight in the trenches, I was a mathematician by profession. I don't like people to get the idea that I have to do this for a living. I mean, it isn't as though I had to do this, you know, I could be making, oh, 3000 dollars a year just teaching. Intro to "Lobachevsky". I am never forget the day I first meet the great Lobachevsky.
