Hospice is the third studio album by American indie rock band The Antlers, and their first concept album. It was initially self-distributed by the band in March 2009, and was eventually remastered and re-released once they signed to Frenchkiss Records in August of the same year
For Burst Apart, Silberman puts his personal tragedy behind him and starts anew by burying himself in electronics to make a unique sort of wistful chamber pop for the digital age. Michael Lerner and t Darby Cicci return to flesh out the songs, but Boards of Canada and Air are more of a guiding force this time than the fuzz-folkish Neutral Milk Hotel influence heard on Hospice.
Burst Apart shows The Antlers to be on sure footing, playing to their strengths, but confident enough in their own instincts to depart from some of the qualities that made them the indie rock wunderkinds of 2009. Chilled and well put together indie rock. Somehow The Antlers are able to successfully follow an album like hospice with a record that feels somehow even more grand and complex. Best Track: No Widows Worst Track: Putting The Dog To Sleep.
If anything, Burst Apart is Hospice wrapped in everyday events, a tragedy where nothing fantastic is really going to happen. Peter is still as masochistic as ever. But I like you inside, so you can push me right now. And Sylvia is still the abusive girlfriend she has always been ( Every time we speak you are spitting in my mouth ). The large variety of melodies and sonic variations in the album is a refreshing step for the group. A development that allows the band to explore many different subtexts of emotions in this album, which, while not making it an emotional jackhammer like it’s predecessor, does manage to paint a vibrant and more colorful landscape.
Burst Apart is the fourth studio album by American indie rock group The Antlers. It was released on Frenchkiss Records on May 10, 2011 and the day before in the UK, Japan, Europe by Transgressive Records. The cover art was designed by Zan Goodman, who also designed the album cover for their previous album, Hospice. It was featured on many best of the year lists of music magazines and was voted album of the year 2011 by Drowned in Sound. Most critics have noted the contrast between Burst Apart and its predecessor Hospice, a highly conceptual album about a hospice worker who falls in love with a dying patient.
