Begun in 1917, Schoeck completed Don Ranudo the following year. Though Don Ranudo was the most often performed of Schoeck's operas during his life, there is some irony in the fact that - given his initial enthusiasm (in which he snatched and set the pages of Rüeger's libretto almost before the ink was dry) - the best-known part of Don Ranudo today is the Serenade for oboe, English horn, and strings, added, at the request of conductor Fritz Busch, to compensate for the omission of Act II when the work was performed in Dresden on October 3, 1930, as part of a double bill with Schoeck's.
