Steig Aus" is Embryo's first album for Brain records and consists of material that was recorded a year earlier but refused by their previous label United Artists. The music has made a dramatic shift towards jazz-rock fusion, which had always been part of their sound, but never to this extent. The Kraut element has completely disappeared and Embryo would never return to it anymore. So it's quite interesting that the album has an alternative title "This is Embryo", as a statement of their new-found identity.

Steig Aus marks a turning point for Embryo. Recorded in 1971-1972, during three separate sessions that also gave birth to Rocksession, the album captures the group actively looking for the ethnic fusion that will soon become its main . for the better part of the decade. It also signals the beginning of the group's distancing from the record industry - both albums were rejected by their major label, which led to a transaction with the forward-looking small label Brain

Embryo Format: Vinyl. I am completely blown away by this 1973 album, which actually consisted of some sessions from 1972 and late 1971 that were rejected by United Artists. Why did UA reject them? They felt the pieces were too lengthy and leaned too much to ethno-fusion. But that's a bit strange that the label did have Can and Amon Duul II who often recorded side-length pieces and even more "out there" at times than what Embryo were doing. But even those two groups left UA by 1974 (and leaving many fans feeling those two groups best days were behind them after leaving that label).
