Off: The Best of the Orb is a greatest hits album by The Orb released in 1998 by Island Records. There is both a double disc and single disc version, the latter being the first disc of the former. The second disc contains alternate mixes of many of the tracks on the first. Unlike many "greatest hits" releases that include the tracks as individual, stand-alone pieces, the tracks included here are seamlessly continuously-mixed like other DJ mixes.

The commercial and artistic peak of the ambient-house movement, . Orb strides past the debut with more periods of free-form ambience and less reliance on a standard 4/4 beat. From the opening ". through the bass-heavy gait of "Blue Room" and "Towers of Dub," the flow is more natural and ranges farther than most would have expected.

This isnt actually a promo but an identical copy of the black vinyl pressing as the catalogue numbers are also identical to the black vinyl comercial issue. It is identical to the standard black vinyl UK pressing except my blue vinyl copy came with no album sleeve or inners. The etchings in run out groove mirror the black vinyl. I guess it was just pressed by someone who wanted to press a few coloured vinyl copies at the pressing plant. Very few copies would of been pressed i would guess no more than 25!).

Coloured vinyl was in vogue at this time, I don't really know why as it usually sounded pretty poor in comparison. The Orb's releases around this 91-93 usually came on coloured vinyl, whether it was a promo or limited edition. They even did a picture disk of one 12". This definitely exists, I've no idea how many copies though. I have read that they would do small colour presses at the end of a regular run. Presumably just because they could. They did two coloured pressings of Assassin, no idea why really as they're identical in terms of run-out etchings etc so presumably the same pressing plate was used (as they would with most plates, why knock up another for the run after doing a promo, makes no sense?!?). I've got most of them, they're increasingly hard to find and I only ever saw the bronze Assassin once, never seen it again since. I've NEVER seen the coloured version of Aubrey mixes anywhere and I've been buying their stuff for over 25 years.

Good spotting on the runouts and cat #'s. I am inclined to agree with the "pressing plant extras" idea. Perhaps it was done as a favour to someone at Big Life? As I mentioned, the copy I bought in '92 came in Big Life house bags and appeared mint. This version appears to be very rare indeed. I've never come across another person with it and only 7 folks on here listed as having it.

I managed to pick up the blue vinyl promo of this fantastic LP at a record fair in Brighton in 1992. It came in a blue Big Life 'House bag' with the same centre labels as the regular vinyl release. The copy appeared mint when I bought it, no post marks around the centre hole, and no finger marks or dust on the vinyl. However from the first time I played it there was noticeable background crackle present. Not so loud as to be annoying but unmissable. I have wondered if this was a pressing problem, the quality of the coloured vinyl used or simply a defect my personal copy. However I've not come across anyone else with this version of the LP so I've not been able to compare.Regardless, I personally rather like a little surface noise, it rather compliments this style of ambient/dub music!

Coloured vinyl was/is notoriously bad for surface noise. It's just symptomatic of the format. I used to always facepalm when labels released 12"s on coloured vinyl because you knew it would always (and did) sound like sh1t. I've a couple on Djax, I think and they're awful.
