Josef Alois Krips (8 April 1902 – 13 October 1974) was an Austrian conductor and violinist. Krips was born in Vienna. His father was Josef Jakob Krips, a medical doctor and amateur singer, and his mother was Aloisia, née Seitz. Krips was one of five sons. Krips went on to become a pupil of Felix Weingartner and Eusebius Mandyczewski. From 1921 to 1924, he served as Weingartner's assistant at the Vienna Volksoper, and also as répétiteur and chorus master.

The concert programmes always include pieces from the Strauss family-Johann Strauss I, Johann Strauss II, Josef Strauss and Eduard Strauss. On occasion, music principally of other Austrian composers, including Joseph Hellmesberger J. Joseph Lanner, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Otto Nicolai (the Vienna Philharmonic's founder), Emil von Reznicek, Franz Schubert, Franz von Suppé, and Karl Michael Ziehrer has featured in the programmes. Map of the countries in which the New Year Concert 2019 of the Vienna Philharmonics was distributed via TV in 2019. The event is televised by the Austrian national broadcasting service ORF – from 1989 to 1993, 1997 to 2009, and again in 2011 under the direction of Brian Large – and relayed via the European Broadcasting Union's Eurovision network to most major broadcasting organizations in Europe.

Johann Strauss, Josef Krips, 1966: The Blue Danube Waltz - Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

Strauss had composed the waltz "Wiener Blut", op. 354, for the Vienna Opera Ball, which was held in the main hall of the Musikverein on April 22, 1873, and he personally conducted its first performance at this event as was his custom, with violin in hand. Yet the conductor who truly founded the Strauss tradition of the Vienna Philharmonic and who remains perhaps to this day the foremost apologist of this music was Clemens Krauss (1893-1954). From 1929-1933 he conducted an annual concert of Strauss compositions at the Salzburg Festival, thus anticipating the format of the future New Year's Concerts. In the years 1946 and 1947, Josef Krips (1902-1974) replaced Krauss, who returned in 1948 after the expiration of his two year conducting ban which had been imposed by the allies, and who conducted seven more New Year's Concerts until 1954.
