Witold Lutosławski (IPA: ; January 25, 1913, Warsaw, Poland – February 7, 1994, Warsaw) was one of the major European composers of the 20th century, and one of the pre-eminent Polish musicians during his last three decades. Lutosławski studied piano and composition in Warsaw. His early works-like the music of many 19th- and 20th-century composers-were influenced by Polish folk music.

The German composer Boris Blacher (1903-1975) is not counted among the major figures of 20th Century music, one that, like Schoenberg or Bartok, broke new grounds and begot many followers and epigones, or one that, like Ives, Hindemith, Janacek, Szymanowski or Britten, had a uniquely distinctive voice. Scholars - following Blacher himself - consider that his personal signature is the invention of the so-called "variable meter" which he experimented from the early 1950s on, . the organization of the rhythmic architecture using regular progressions of the metrical signatures (or number of beats per measure), following simple arithmetic or more complex geometric rules. But I don't find those "kitchen matters" so important. What matters are the results, not the processes.

Witold Lutosławski at the piano. During the postwar years, Lutosławski worked on his first symphony-sketches of which he had salvaged from Warsaw-which he had started in 1941 and which was first performed in 1948, conducted by Fitelberg. To provide for his family, he also composed music that he termed functional, such as the Warsaw Suite (written to accompany a silent film depicting the city's reconstruction), sets of Polish Carols, and the study pieces for piano, Melodie Ludowe ("Folk Melodies").
