Cool Heat ~ The Best Of Cti Records, Various ArtistsAudio CD. Various Artists. Emulating the iconic CTI high-gloss look, this set offers four CDs in a colorful 12"x12" LP gatefold cover. Included is a large format booklet with a fine introductory narrative, although what is really needed is a more complete historical description, such as Ashley Kahn's wonderful "The House That Trane Built" about Impulse Records, Creed Taylor's inspiration for CTI Records.

Creed Taylor International and its funk-subsidiary Kudu codified early 1970s soul-influenced jazz into an aspirational art-form on thick-sleeved LPs whose grooves you could always tap a toe to. This four-disc compendium offers a good selection from the label's history, focusing on cool jazz, Brazil, and pop covers. Rudy Van Gelder is the engineer, and Ron Carter the double bassist, on almost everything here. Mr Magic" still sounds great, and George Benson's "White Rabbit" far better than it should.

Well, there's certainly a lot of good music here. However, given the vast wealth of music on this label, I believe this compilation falls short and suffers from questionable track choices.First off, there is a preponderance of covers. All three George Benson tracks are covers. He recorded, what, at least five or six albums for CTI, all of which had great original compositions. None of that is represented here. Then there's Ron Carter covering two charts from Kind of Blue (one of which was already covered by Benson on this set). Now, don't get me wrong, they're both classic charts, and these versions are really great, but Ron Carter did his own stuff too, and it was good. There are too many Hubert Laws tracks here, and they're all among the worst tracks, including an awful version of Fire and Rain. Chet Baker's version of Autumn Leaves is fine, but who hasn't heard it umpteen times? The brilliant Airto gets two great tracks. His version of Return to Forever is awesome. But Bob James did four CTI albums and he gets only one track. Deodato, likewise, is shorted. And Grover Washington did several excellent recordings for sister label Kudu, yet he too gets only one track. At least Freddie Hubbard gets some room here, though there are a couple additional tracks that should have been included. Turrentine could have been given more space too. Other gems are the Esther Phillips tracks and the Gilberto/Turrentine collaboration. So whilst most of the music is technically good, this compilation could have been much better and more representative. Jazz was left for dead in the early-70s. CTI played an important role in continuing the evolution of post-bop and the transition to fusion. Unfortunately, you'll have to really dig into the individual albums to hear that evolution in action; most tracks here are fairly straight ahead.
