This Diamond Ring is the debut studio album by American band Gary Lewis & the Playboys, and was released in 1965 on Liberty Records, LRP-3408. It is the first of three charting albums released by the band in 1965. The group was formed in 1964 and was originally known as Gary & the Playboys. Producer Snuff Garrett saw them performing at Disneyland and he brought them into the studio to record the single "This Diamond Ring"
This Diamond Ring" is a 1965 song written by Al Kooper, Bob Brass and Irwin Levine. Gary Lewis & the Playboys have never been taken too seriously by rock historians, which is somewhat a matter of prejudice, growing out of the idea (only partly true) that Lewis had a free ride, thanks to the help of his then superstar entertainer father - and their status as mid-'60s pop/rock entertainers, without a resident songwriter or. a philosophy behind their work. Apart from "This Diamond Ring," a song originally written with the Drifters in mind (who rejected it, as did Bobby Vee) which became a monster debut hit single, there's a lot of worthwhile, breezy pop/rock among the 16 tracks here. Lewis and company - Dave Walker, Dave Costell, Al Ramsay, and John R. West - do okay by covers of "Needles and Pins," "Sweet Little Rock 'n Roller," "All Day and All of the Night," "Dream Lover," "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes," "Concrete and Clay," etc.

Gary Lewis & the Playboys were an American 1960s era pop and rock group, fronted by musician Gary Lewis, the son of comedian Jerry Lewis. They are best known for their 1965 Billboard Hot 100 number-one single "This Diamond Ring", which was the first of a string of hit singles they had in 1965 and 1966. The band had an earnest, boy-next-door image similar to British invasion contemporaries such as Herman's Hermits and Gerry and the Pacemakers.

A Session with Gary Lewis is a excellent sounding album. Gary seems to perform many of the covers of those songs in the live shows. Overall it is a combined set of enjoyable sing-along albums which is what music is there for. Count Me In might have been the best release that Gary Lewis did. This Diamond Ring a close second and She's Just My Style third. Gary's covers of Palisades Park, Runaway and Concrete and Clay are exceptional. I figured they would be remixed and remastered up to CD quality. Even though I really like Gary Lewis and The Playboys' music, I was really disappointed. It sounds like they recorded them right off the old vinyl-thin sounding with all the instruments on one side and all the vocals on the other. It seems to me it was a rush job just to get it released before Christmas '9. he saving grace of the CD is the inclusion of BOTH flip sides of "This Diamond Ring"-"Hard to Find" and "Tijuana Wedding
