Comprised of violinists Diane Monroe and Lesa Terry, Maxine Roach on viola and cellist Eileen Folson, the group ranks as the second major improvising string quartet ever, after Turtle Island. On this consistently enjoyable and often-surprising CD, the band plays a wide range of music including several ancient folk songs, John Carisi's "Jelly Roll Rag," Oscar Pettiford's classic "Tricotism," Scott Joplin's "Easy Winners" and some modern originals by Max Roach, Odean Pope, Fred Tillis and Cecil Bridgewater

The Uptown String Quartet is one of the most unusual and important string quartets to emerge in recent years. Its members bring a wealth of experience in both classical and jazz music to create a unique sound of their own. Skilled improvisors and polished ensemble players, they traverse a tremendous range of music and match their expansive techniques and subtle dynamic shades to the demands of each piece they perform.

Album · 1987 · 5 Songs. Cecil Bridgewater, Tyrone Brown, Diane Monroe, Odean Pope, Max Roach, Maxine Roach, Lesa Terry, Zela Terry & Uptown String Quartet.

This quartet joined "The Uptown String Quartet", led by his daughter Maxine Roach and featuring Diane Monroe, Lesa Terry, and Eileen Folson. Another ensemble was the "So What Brass Quintet", a group comprising five brass instrumentalists and Roach, with no chordal instrument and no bass player. Much of the performance consisted of drums and horn duets. In 1966, with his album Drums Unlimited (which includes several tracks that are entirely drum solos) he demonstrated that drums can be a solo instrument able to play theme, variations, and rhythmically cohesive phrases. Roach described his approach to music as "the creation of organized sound. The track "The Drum Also Waltzes" was often quoted by John Bonham in his Moby Dick drum solo and revisited by other drummers, including Neil Peart and Steve Smith. Bill Bruford performed a cover of the track on the 1985 album Flags.
